Apple Watch: Scribble Instead of Dictation

When you can't (or don't want to) dictate a reply on Apple Watch, use Scribble to write letters with your finger.

How to use it

  1. In a Messages or Mail reply, tap the text field
  2. Tap Scribble (or swipe up to find it in the input options)
  3. Write letters with your finger — the text field converts handwriting on-the-fly
  4. Turn the Digital Crown to move the cursor and edit
  5. Tap Send when finished

Good to know

  • Scribble is available on any Apple Watch running watchOS 7 or later.
  • You can write in multiple languages — Apple Watch recognizes the language you're writing in automatically.
  • If Scribble doesn't appear, check that it's enabled in the Watch app on your iPhone under General → Scribble.
  • Scribble works in any app that accepts text input, not just Messages and Mail.
