In iOS/iPadOS 18, Apple removed the dedicated photo button from the messages app. Now, you are forced to press the "+ (plus)" button, and select photos or camera from the list of apps.

If you long press on the + button, you will launch straight into the photo picker so you can easily and quickly attach a photo to the conversation.
